The bulging disc is a regular injury occurring on the spine. The lumbar, thoracic and the cervical spines are the main areas of the spine that are the affected. The lumbar spine is located on the lower back, the thoracic one covers the upper and middle part of the body. Finally, and there is the cervical part which is the neck.
Many people suffer from the bulging disc which is also referred to as the slipped or protruding disc. You will usually experience a number of symptoms which will tell you that you have a bulging disc. The following are the main the main symptoms to watch out for;
Pain in the neck
There will be a tingling sensation accompanied by pain. The thoracic spine is connected to the rest of the spinal cord and when one part is affected, it radiates to the rest of the body.
Other problems which could occur in relation to the thoracic spine include the following:
Weakness in the muscles
The muscles in the legs will become weak, numb and tingly. When you start experiencing any of the above, it is important that you seek treatment for a slipped disc.
The reflexes in both legs may become so severe that one ends up suffering from what we call spasticity.
Loss of bowel and bladder control
The pressure on the spine may impact on the ability to attend to short and long call. There will be a lot of difficulty in passing urine for instance. One will thus tend to feel a lot of pain when attending to a call of nature.
The part of the body from the waist going downwards may be affected to the point that it becomes paralysed. If you realize that you are no longer able to feel the limbs or cannot move, it is because of the paralysis caused by the damage in the nerves.
Perhaps before we seek the appropriate treatment for the problem, we should proceed to find out why the problem arises in the first place.
This is a part of the back may become weak and as a result, the bulging disc problem may arise. The weakness will usually be an existing as opposed to being brought about by an external problem.
There may be pressure which could cause the fibrous material lying in the annulus to be torn
There are some people who are genetically predisposed to this problem.
If you apply sudden and unexpected weight on the discs, they will slip, hence the problem.
Apart from the neck, the pain moves to the shoulders, hands and fingers .All these parts are linked to the upper spine and will be affected in the event you have a budging disc.
Lower back pain
If you experience lower back pain, the main culprit could be the slipped disc. When it ages and degenerates, there is pressure build-up on the nerves found at the lower back.
People with this problem will tend to experience muscle spasms.
